In the current issue of Professional Artist magazine, I interviewed five artists about how to nail an artist talk. I also reveal the most important first step in preparing any talk – which is also the easiest step: observe other presenters and notice what the qualities you admire. What do you want to emulate? These other presenters can be anybody giving any type of presentation from the welcome at your PTA meeting to the stand-up comedian on the Netflix special.
Your goal is not to imitate them but to notice aspects of their performance that you can incorporate too — like good eye contact and storytelling that is full of specific detail so your audience can really "see" your story in their mind's eye.
