Where to look when presenting online [public speaking tip]

When you're presenting online, where do you look?

If you only look at your camera, you'll miss reading the faces of your audience. And if you never look at the camera, then your audience won't get your good eye contact.

But looking at the camera isn't easy. And if you have notes, where do you put those so you don't lose your audience every time you look at your notes?

I have some ideas for you in this 90-second lesson "Where to Look When Presenting Online." A couple things to add:

  • I like having my notes printed so I can hold them in my hands. But many presenters I coach, have their notes onscreen. If you like having your notes printed, like I do, I'll show you the best place to put your notes so you can maintain good eye contact with your audience.

  • It's not necessary to look at the camera for an entire presentation. Let your camera be the home base for your eyes. Look at it as you open and close and then glance at it occasionally.

I’m wishing you ease and good eye contact in all your presentations!

When I'm presenting online, I tape a tiny photograph of one of my favorite people near the camera on my laptop. Find out who in my latest 90-second lesson "Where to Look When Presenting Online."
