If I went around to everyone who works at your company and asked them,
“What do you do?”
Do you think I would come away with the impression that they all worked for the same organization?
Often what I find, when I talk to several people at the same institution, is that their messages aren't aligned and the way they introduce themselves, doesn’t make it sound like they all work at the same place.
Now, of course, every employee needs to put their introduction or their elevator speech in their own words, or put their particular spin on it. But their introductions need to be aligned. Everyone needs to sound like they all work at the same company.
I’ve also worked for organizations where the marketing department has given everyone a script with the exact wording they should be using and then the introductions sound stiff and like the employee is reading off the website, not making an honest connection with another person.
In truth, the happy place is in the middle, where everyone sounds like themselves (where they are using language that is undeniably “them”) but perhaps using some key phrases or descriptions that tie everyone’s speech together.
This is just one example of what we cover in my training on how to write and deliver a great elevator speech or introduction. If this sounds like a training that maybe you could use, contact me for details.
