Today I want to talk about eye line: Where are you supposed to look when you're in an online meeting?
Right now I'm looking right at the camera. I've also got a photo pasted just below the camera. So I can either look at the camera or I can look at the photo.
What I want you to avoid is looking at the person you're talking to, especially if they're low on your screen. Look at the difference between me looking down there at versus me looking at my camera or my photograph posted right near my camera.
Why did I post a photograph near my camera? It's a great reminder to me that that's where your eyes are, it's also a picture of somebody who makes me feel relaxed and aligned, so whenever I look at the photograph, that’s how I feel.
Another note about eye line: If my notes are low down on the table, every time I look at them, I'm going to lose you. But if you put your notes on your keyboard, there'll be a little closer. So it's just a quick look down.
We talk about eye line often in my trainings because good eye contact can help your audience feel a connection with you, the speaker.
