Who's your alter ego? [Everyone needs one]

Your inner Diva helps you present better every time. Thank you to Melinda Beck for this gorgeous illustration.

Bruce Wayne has Batman. Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce. Even George Costanza has Art Vandelay. And I have Wanda.

Do you have an alter ego? And why might you want one? Because sometimes, in high-stakes presentations, an alter ego (or inner Diva) will help you deliver.

Invite your alter ego to deliver your presentation

I was in a taxi muscling through NYC traffic from midtown to SoHo, feeling jittery and unsettled. Today was my presentation to a roomful of high-powered, international researchers. But instead of feeling calm and confident, worst-case scenarios played through my mind. Even my palms were sweating!

So, I called on Wanda, my alter ego, who I think of as my inner Diva.

"Don't ride in this cab like you're the scullery maid," she admonished me. "Ride like you're the star in the movie of your life, because, for better or for worse, that's who you are."

I sat up straighter. I enjoyed the view. We whizzed to SoHo. I thanked the driver and strode into my presentation feeling as confident as Wanda always feels. And she delivered. Majorly. She captivated her audience for 2 hours. Because she's Wanda (not me!) and that's how she rolls.

Do you have a Wanda? If so, I'd love to hear from you. What's their name? What do they do for you?

If not, you might want to find your Wanda, or alter ego or inner Diva.

To foster yours, follow my Diva's list of Dos and Don'ts. She promises better presentations every time.

Wishing you clarity and confidence in all your presentations!
